Manner ("without") uses ないで; なくて would try to give a reason.
  • ✗
    時間がないで困った。
    ✓
    時間がなくて困った。
    Why
A reason for 困った uses なくて.
  • ✗
    遅れないでするな。
    ✓
    遅れるな。/ 遅れないで。
    Why
ないで alone already works as a casual request; don't add another command.

〜ないで (manner/instead) vs 〜なくて (cause: "because not"). x 傘を持たなくて出かけた. ずに cannot be used for requests (x 〜ずにください). Adjectives and nouns use なくて / じゃなくて, not ないで: 学生じゃなくて社員だ.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Ask: is the second half a result caused by not doing X? Then なくて. Otherwise (manner, instead, request) ないで.
  • A blank followed by ください is always ないで.
  • In formal written passages, ずに replaces ないで for manner; recognize both.
