Common mistakes
- ✗
- いくら高いたって、これは買う。
- ✓
- いくら高くたって、これは買う。
- Why
- い-adjectives change to -く before たって, just as they do before ても (高くても).
- ✗
- レポートは、時間がなくたって提出せざるを得ない。(in a formal report)
- ✓
- レポートは、時間がなくても提出せざるを得ない。
- Why
- たって is spoken and casual; in written or formal Japanese use ても.
- ✗
- 今から走るたって間に合わない。
- ✓
- 今から走ったって間に合わない。
- Why
- たって attaches to the た-form (走った + って), not to the dictionary form.
だって at the start of a sentence is a different word: 'but / because' (だって、忙しいんだもん). 何をしたって, どうしたって are set phrases meaning 'whatever I do'. In listening, 〜たって is easy to mishear as 〜たって (quotation 'said that'); context tells them apart.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- The choices in a casual dialogue will often be たって vs ても vs たら; if いくら or どんなに appears, たって/ても is right and たら is not.
- Check the form before the blank: た-form + って, adjective -く + たって, noun + だって.
- Sentence-initial だって ('because') is a separate item; do not confuse it with the noun + だって pattern.
