Lesson 76 of 133

〜べきだ / 〜べきではない

beki da / beki dewa nai

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N2, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

should / ought to (moral or logical duty); should not

〜べきだ tells you what is right to do: "Promises should be kept." It is stronger and more opinionated than 〜ほうがいい, and it is about what is proper, not about laws or rules. 〜べきではない is "should not", and 〜べきだった is "should have (but didn't)".

Opinions, advice from a position of authority, essays and debates. Because it sounds firm, avoid using it toward superiors; say 〜たほうがいい instead. Do not use it for legal or institutional rules (use 〜なければならない).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (dictionary form) + べきだ / べきです
  • する → すべきだ or するべきだ
  • Negative: Verb + べきではない / べきじゃない
  • Past regret: Verb + べきだった / べきではなかった
  • Before a noun: Verb + べき + Noun (守るべきルール)

Visual diagram

How strong is the advice?
  1. 〜たほうがいい

Friendly suggestion: 'it would be better to…'.

  2. 〜べきだ

Firm opinion about what is right: 'you ought to…'.

  3. 〜なければならない

Obligation from rules, deadlines or necessity: 'must'.

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜たほうがいい

Softer advice for a specific person or situation. べきだ states a general duty.

  • 〜なければならない

  • 〜ものだ

'That's what people do' — a social norm stated as common sense rather than a personal opinion. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    日本では車は左を走るべきだ。
    ✓
    日本では車は左を走らなければならない。
    Why
Traffic rules are laws, not moral opinions; use なければならない.
  • ✗
    食べたべきだった。
    ✓
    食べるべきだった。
    Why
べき always attaches to the dictionary form; tense goes on だ (べきだった), not on the verb.
  • ✗
    部長、もっと休むべきです。
    ✓
    部長、もう少し休まれたほうがいいと思います。
    Why
べきだ to a superior sounds like a lecture. Use a softer suggestion.

すべき (without る) is a little more formal and common in writing; するべき is fine in speech. べきだと思う / べきではないだろうか soften the statement. べき can modify a noun directly: 考えるべき問題, やるべきこと ('things to do').

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • If the sentence is a general moral statement (promises, manners, honesty), choose べきだ; if it is a rule or deadline, choose なければならない.
  • Watch the verb form: べき follows the dictionary form only. A た-form before the blank rules it out.
  • べきだった + のに / が signals regret; do not confuse it with はずだった (expectation that failed).
