〜はずがない / 〜はずはない
hazu ga nai / hazu wa nai
By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
it can't be that… / there's no way… (strong denial based on reasoning)
〜はずがない says "logically, that is impossible". You have evidence or good reasons, so you reject the idea completely: "That shop can't be closed — today is a weekday." It is the strong negative partner of 〜はずだ ("should be / must be").
Both speech and writing, whenever you flatly reject something on the basis of what you know. Polite: 〜はずがありません. With は instead of が (はずはない) the denial is a little more contrastive, as if answering someone.
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
Verb (plain form) + はずがないい-adjective + はずがないな-adjective + な + はずがないNoun + の + はずがないPolite: 〜はずがありません / Variant: 〜はずはない

JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- Look for evidence or reasoning in the surrounding sentence (今日は平日だ, あんなに練習した). That makes はずがない the natural choice over an emotional わけがない.
- Distinguish はずがない (impossible) from はずだった (was supposed to) and はずだ (should be). Check the ending carefully.
- Double negatives (ないはずがない) are a favourite trick: translate them as a strong positive.
