〜性 / 〜せい

Meaning

-ness / -ity (quality, nature, property)

Noun or な-adjective + 性 makes a noun meaning "the quality of being X": 可能性 "possibility", 危険性 "danger (as a property)", 安全性 "safety", 社会性 "sociability". These nouns are usually measured: 可能性が高い / 低い, 危険性がある / ない.

Formal and written Japanese, news, science, business: 必要性, 重要性, 積極性, 個性, 国民性. In speech, 可能性 is by far the most common.

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun / な-adjective stem + 性 (noun)
  • 〜性がある / ない (has / lacks the quality)
  • 〜性が高い / 低い (the degree is high / low)

    危険性がある: carries danger.

    可能性が高い: the most common 性 phrase.

    かのじょはしゃかいせいのあるひとだ。

    She is a sociable person.

    社会性のある: with の before a noun.

  4. この薬の安全性については、まだ十分に確認されていない。

    このくすりのあんぜんせいについては、まだじゅうぶんにかくにんされていない。

    The safety of this medicine has not yet been fully confirmed.

    安全性 = safety as a property.

  5. 彼は積極性があって、新しい仕事にもすぐ挑戦する。

    かれはせっきょくせいがあって、あたらしいしごとにもすぐちょうせんする。

    He has initiative and quickly takes on new tasks.

    積極性 from the な-adjective 積極的.
