〜化 / 〜か

ka (-ization)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

-ization / turn into… / become… (change of state)

Noun + 化 means "becoming X" or "making X": 自動化 "automation", 少子化 "declining birthrate", 温暖化 "warming". It creates a する-verb: 自動化する "to automate" (transitive) or 悪化する "to worsen" (intransitive). Add が進む to say the change is advancing: 高齢化が進む.

News, social issues, business and science: 国際化, デジタル化, 映画化 (film adaptation). It is a productive suffix, so you will meet new 化 words constantly; the meaning is always 'change into'.

  • 〜性

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    町が国際化になった。
    ✓
    町が国際化した。
    Why
化 words are する-verbs; 化になる is redundant.
  • ✗
    高齢化が進める
    ✓
    高齢化が進む
    Why
With が, the intransitive 進む is needed ('is advancing'). 進める is transitive.
  • ✗
    便利化
    ✓
    便利になる
    Why
化 attaches to nouns (mostly Sino-Japanese); 便利 is a な-adjective and does not take 化.

Two-kanji 化 words with a single kanji root: 悪化 (worsening), 強化 (strengthening), 変化 (change), 進化 (evolution), 消化 (digestion). Katakana roots are common: デジタル化, グローバル化, マニュアル化. Reading: 化 is か in this use (ばける in 化ける is a different word).
