Meaning
ちゅう: in the middle of… / during…; じゅう: throughout… / all over…
The kanji 中 has two readings with two jobs. Read ちゅう, it means "currently doing" or "during": 電話中 "on the phone", 会議中 "in a meeting", 午前中 "during the morning". Read じゅう, it means "the whole of": 一日中 "all day", 世界中 "all over the world".
Signs and notices (使用中, 準備中, 工事中), everyday speech (一日中, 一年中), and time expressions. 今日中 (きょうじゅう) and 今週中 mean "by the end of today / this week".

Reading traps: 今日中 (きょうじゅう), 今年中 (ことしじゅう) but 午前中 (ごぜんちゅう), 今月中 (こんげつちゅう or じゅう, both heard). 世界中 (せかいじゅう) and 日本中 (にほんじゅう) are place uses of じゅう. 〜中に can mean 'while' (留守中に = while away) or 'within' (今週中に).
