〜させてもらう / 〜させていただく

sasete morau / sasete itadaku

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

be allowed to… / (humbly) do… with your permission

〜させてもらう means "I'll do it, with your permission". 〜させていただく is the humble version and is everywhere in business Japanese: 自己紹介をさせていただきます "allow me to introduce myself". Even when no real permission is needed, it makes the speaker sound modest and considerate.

Business speech, announcements, emails (休業させていただきます), and polite conversation. Casual equivalent: 〜させてもらう. Asking form: 〜させてもらってもいいですか / 〜させていただけませんか.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb causative て-form + もらう (casual-polite)
  • Verb causative て-form + いただく (humble)
  • Asking: 〜させてもらえますか / 〜させていただけませんか
  • Announcing: 〜させていただきます

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜させてください

The request form. させていただきます announces what the speaker will do. Compare side by side

  • お〜します / ご〜します

Ordinary humble form (ご説明します). させていただきます adds the flavour of 'with your permission'.

  • 〜てもらう / 〜ていただく

Without the causative, the other person does the action for you (説明していただく = you explain to me).

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    説明していただきます。(meaning 'I will explain')
    ✓
    説明させていただきます。
    Why
Without させ, the listener becomes the one who explains.
  • ✗
    休まさせていただきます。
    ✓
    休ませていただきます。
    Why
休む is Group 1: 休ませて. Adding an extra さ (さ入れ言葉) is a common error.
  • ✗
    友達との会話で「食べさせていただくね」
    ✓
    食べさせてもらうね。
    Why
いただく is humble; among friends use もらう.

Overuse of させていただきます is criticised in Japanese style guides, but for JLPT it is a standard humble form. Formal writing: させていただきたく存じます. For Group 1 verbs avoid the extra さ: 読ませて, 帰らせて, 行かせて.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Ask who acts: if the speaker acts → させていただく; if the listener acts → ていただく.
  • Watch for さ入れ distractors like 帰らさせて; the correct Group 1 form has one さ less.
  • Business dialogues in 聴解 open with 〜させていただきます; the content that follows is what matters.
