〜てはじめて

te hajimete

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

only after, not until (a realization follows)

〜てはじめて means "only after X did Y happen", where Y is usually a realization: 病気になってはじめて、健康のありがたさが分かった. Before X, the speaker did not know or notice Y. The main clause typically contains 分かる, 気づく, 知る, or 〜ようになる.

Both speech and writing; common in reflective statements and essays. It is neutral in register. はじめて here is the adverb 'for the first time', so the pattern literally says 'for the first time after doing X'.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (て-form) + はじめて
  • Main clause: 分かる / 気づく / 知る / 実感する / 〜ようになる
  • Noun + があってはじめて (only with X)
  • Kanji: 初めて (usual)

  • 〜て以来

"Ever since": marks a starting point without the realization nuance.

  • 〜たら

Plain 'when'; no sense of 'not until'.

  • 〜ないと〜ない

"Unless X, not Y": similar logic in a negative frame.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    病気になるはじめて
    ✓
    病気になってはじめて
    Why
    Use the て-form before はじめて.
  • ✗
    病気になってはじめて、薬を飲んだ。
    ✓
    病気になってはじめて、健康の大切さが分かった。
    Why
The main clause should be a realization, not just the next action.
  • ✗
    初めて病気になって、分かった。
    ✓
    病気になってはじめて、分かった。
    Why
Word order matters: 初めて before the verb means 'for the first time'; after the て-form it means 'not until'.

The realization is usually something that should have been obvious earlier. 〜があってはじめて expresses a necessary condition. Often followed by 〜ものだ in general statements: 失ってはじめて分かるものだ.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • If the て-form precedes the blank and the main clause is 分かる / 気づく, choose てはじめて.
  • Distinguish from てこそ by the main clause: realization (てはじめて) versus value (てこそ).
  • Watch the position of はじめて; before the verb it is just 'for the first time'.
