    Why
The pattern describes someone else's behaviour from the outside; the speaker knows their own intention.
  • ✗
    彼は嬉しいとばかりに笑った。
    ✓
    彼は嬉しくてたまらないとばかりに笑った。
    Why
X should be a message-like phrase; a bare adjective is weak. (Also fine: 嬉しさを隠しきれないとばかりに.)
  • ✗
    チャンスばかりに
    ✓
    チャンスとばかりに
    Why
    と is required.

Frequent set phrases: ここぞとばかりに, 待ってましたとばかりに, これ見よがしに (related idiom). The action is visible and energetic. Quotation marks are often used around X in writing.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • A quoted or imperative phrase + blank + a vivid third-person action → とばかりに.
  • んばかりに is the trap: it attaches to a verb stem (泣かんばかり) and means "almost about to".
  • If the subject is 私, とばかりに is wrong.
