Meaning
be about to …; be trying to …
〜んとする is the classical equivalent of 〜ようとする. It has two meanings: (1) "be just about to": 夕日が沈まんとしている (the sun is about to set); (2) "try to / seek to": 真実を明らかにせんとして (seeking to reveal the truth). The ん is the classical volitional on the ない-stem.
Highly literary written Japanese: novels, speeches, historical narrative. Meaning 1 often takes まさに and describes natural events or the end of an era; meaning 2 describes determined efforts. In ordinary Japanese, ようとする is used.
