が分かる / ができる

ga wakaru / ga dekiru

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

"understand X" / "can do X". Both take が for the thing understood or possible.

分かる (understand) and できる (can do) both mark the thing understood or possible with が, not を: 日本語が分かります "I understand Japanese", ピアノができます "I can play the piano". Saying which languages you understand, what skills you have (sports, instruments, cooking), and asking whether something is possible (予約ができますか).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

JLPT N5 tips

On the exam

  • 分かります and できます after the blank → が. This is one of the most reliable N5 rules.
  • Between 分かりません and 知りません: 分かりません = I don't understand / I'm not sure; 知りません = I have no knowledge of it. The exam uses 分かりません for meanings and questions.
