- Meaning
- Every Japanese verb belongs to one of three groups; the group decides how it conjugates.
- Formation
**Group 1 (u-verbs, 五段)**: dictionary form ends in any う-row sound: 書く, 話す, 待つ, 死ぬ, 読む, 遊ぶ, 買う, 帰る, 分かる, 走る.**Group 2 (ru-verbs, 一段)**: ends in -いる or -える: 見る, 食べる, 起きる, 寝る, 教える, 出る, 着る.**Group 3 (irregular)**: する and 来る only (plus N+する verbs: 勉強する, 電話する).
毎朝新聞を読みます。
まいあさ しんぶんを よみます。
I read the newspaper every morning. (読む, Group 1)
七時に起きます。
しちじに おきます。

- The connecting form — used for requests (てください), continuing actions (ている), permission, prohibition, joining clauses, and sequence.
- Formation
Group 1 う・つ・る → って: 買う→買って, 待つ→待って, 帰る→帰ってGroup 1 む・ぶ・ぬ → んで: 読む→読んで, 遊ぶ→遊んで, 死ぬ→死んでGroup 1 く → いて: 書く→書いて, 聞く→聞いて (exception: 行く→行って)Group 1 ぐ → いで: 泳ぐ→泳いで, 急ぐ→急いでGroup 1 す → して: 話す→話して, 貸す→貸してGroup 2: drop る + て: 食べる→食べて, 見る→見て, 起きる→起きてGroup 3: する→して, 来る→来て (きて)
