住まい — 家は買うべきか、借りるべきか

Strategy notes: read these before the passage

  • For A/B passages, write one line per writer: A = buy (money stays as an asset, security); B = rent (life changes, mobility). Then check each option against both.
  • A shared point is often stated as a concession: A admits 買った家を簡単に手放せない, B says ローンは縛られる. Same idea, different words.
  • Questions on B's key phrase (「動けること」) ask for its meaning in context; look at B's examples of life changes.

私は三十五歳のときに家を買った。理由は簡単で、家賃を払い続けても何も残らないからだ。毎月十万円の家賃を三十年払えば三千六百万円になる。同じ金額をローンに払えば、三十年後に家が残る。それに、自分の家なら壁に穴を開けても、犬を飼っても、だれにも文句を言われない。「自分の場所がある」という安心感は、数字では計れない。

もちろん、転勤やご近所との問題など、リスクはある。買った家を簡単に手放せないのは事実だ。しかし、人生の土台(どだい)として、家を持つ価値は今も大きいと思う。

私は家を買わないと決めている。理由は、人生が変わるからだ。仕事が変わり、家族の人数が変わり、親の介護(かいご)で故郷に戻ることもあるかもしれない。三十年ローンは、三十年間同じ場所に縛(しば)られることでもある。

それに、家は買った瞬間(しゅんかん)から古くなる。三十年後に残る家は、修理(しゅうり)にお金がかかる古い家だ。賃貸(ちんたい)なら、そのときの生活に合った広さと場所を選び直せる。私にとって大事なのは「持つこと」ではなく、「動けること」だ。
