Strategy notes: read these before the passage
- B opens with 「反対ではない。しかし〜」: B does not oppose early learning itself, only the belief that early = fluent. Options that make B a flat opponent are traps.
- Find the exact point of disagreement: A says age is what matters; B says having something to say matters. Both accept that children can learn early.
- 「違いは〜ではなく〜だ」 in B names the deciding factor. That sentence is B's thesis.

子どもの英語教育は、早ければ早いほどよいと思う。私の娘は三歳から英語の教室に通っているが、発音が自然で、外国人の先生と話すことをまったく怖がらない。大人になってから始めた私が、いくら勉強しても「英語を話すのが恥ずかしい」という気持ちを捨てられないのとは大きな違いだ。
言葉は頭で覚えるものではなく、耳と体で慣れるものだ。慣れるには、小さいうちが一番いい。「日本語が先」という意見もあるが、子どもは二つの言葉を自然に区別できる。心配しすぎだと思う。

早く始めること自体に反対ではない。しかし、「早く始めれば話せるようになる」というのは、少し違うと思う。私は英語教師をしているが、小学生から英語を習っていても、中学で伸び悩む子は多い。逆に、中学から始めて、高校で留学するほど伸びる子もいる。
違いは、始めた年齢ではなく、「伝えたいことがあるか」だ。日本語で自分の考えを深く話せる子は、英語でも話すことがある。母語で考える力を育てることが、結局は英語の力にもなる。急ぐより、土台を作るほうが先だと思う。
