Passage
健康のために運動を始めよう。そう決心した人の多くが、三か月後には何もしていない。私もそうだった。ジムに申し込み、高い靴を買い、最初の二週間は張り切って通った。しかし、仕事が忙しくなると一日休み、二日休み、気がつけば会費だけを払っていた。
変わったきっかけは、医者の一言だった。「毎日三十分走る必要はありません。毎日十分歩くほうが、ずっと体にいい」。つまり、量より続けることが大事だというのだ。私は、駅の一つ手前で降りて歩くことにした。特別な準備はいらない。雨の日は休んでもいい。そうやって、ハードルを下げた。
それから二年になる。体重は少し減っただけだが、階段で息が切れなくなり、夜よく眠れるようになった。何より、「自分は続けられる人間だ」という自信がついた。健康習慣で大切なのは、立派な目標ではなく、明日もできる小ささなのだと思う。
