Passage
外国から来た友人に「日本人はなぜ桜の下で酒を飲むのか。花を見るなら静かに見ればいいのに」と聞かれて、うまく答えられなかった。確かに、花見の席で桜をじっと眺めている人はあまりいない。皆、食べて、飲んで、話している。
調べてみると、花見の起源は奈良時代の貴族が梅を見ながら歌を詠んだ行事にあるという。それが平安時代に桜に変わり、江戸時代になると庶民にも広がった。当時の江戸の町では、桜の名所に大勢の人が集まり、弁当を広げ、踊ったりしたそうだ。つまり、花見は最初から「みんなで集まって楽しむ日」だったのである。
また、桜は一週間ほどで散ってしまう。この短さが、「今のうちに集まろう」という気持ちを強くするのだろう。長く咲く花なら、わざわざ日を決めて集まる必要はない。
友人にこう説明すると、「なるほど。花は理由ではなく、きっかけなんだね」と言われた。その言い方が、私にはいちばんしっくりきた。
