By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Things like… / … or something / someone like…

〜なんか attaches to a noun and softens or belittles it: お茶なんかどう? = how about some tea or something? 私なんかには無理だ = someone like me couldn't do it. It replaces は / が / を and keeps other particles (になんか, となんか).

Casual speech. Softer than なんて; often used for gentle suggestions and modesty. Formal: など.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun + なんか (replaces は / が / を)
  • Noun + になんか / となんか / でなんか
  • Suggestion: 〜なんかどう? / いかがですか
  • Formal: など

    ✓
    彼が来るなんて、驚いた。
    Why
なんか does not attach to clauses.
  • ✗
    先生なんかに相談しました。(to the teacher's face)
    ✓
    先生に相談しました。
    Why
なんか belittles the noun; rude about a superior.
  • ✗
    お茶をなんか
    ✓
    お茶なんか
    Why
    なんか replaces を.

Attaches only to nouns (なんて can take clauses). Formal: など. In offers (〜なんかどう?) it is a soft suggestion, not contempt. Adverbial なんか = "somehow": なんか変だ (something's odd). Different use.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • A noun + blank + どう / いかが in an offer = なんか (soft example).
  • A clause before the blank rules out なんか; choose なんて.
  • Keep に / と before なんか (私になんか); options like 私なんかに are also fine, so exams test the clause vs noun distinction more.
