Meaning

-ness, -ity (abstract quality or property)

〜性 attaches to nouns and な-adjective stems to make abstract nouns naming a quality or property: 可能性 (possibility), 安全性 (safety), 重要性 (importance), 必要性 (necessity). These nouns are typical of formal and academic writing and take verbs like ある / 高い / 低い / 欠ける.

Written and formal spoken Japanese: news, reports, science, business. In conversation people often use the adjective instead (安全かどうか rather than 安全性).
