Meaning
half-done, in the middle of; just started to
Verb stem + かける means an action was started but not finished: 読みかけの本 (a half-read book), 言いかけて (started to say), やりかけだ (half done). It can also mean 'be about to / almost': 死にかける (nearly die). The forms are かけの + noun, かける as a verb, and かけだ as a predicate.
Both speech and writing. Very common for objects left unfinished (食べかけ, 飲みかけ) and for interrupted actions (言いかけてやめる). Note that some かける compounds are separate words: 話しかける (address), 呼びかける (call out).
