Memory tip

Literally "yielding a step" — 譲る + 歩. It is one side giving ground in a negotiation, whereas 妥協 is the meeting point both sides settle for. Note that 譲歩 is not weakness in Japanese; 譲歩を引き出す (extract concessions) is a compliment to the negotiator.
