Memory tip

It plays two roles: opening a sentence it means 'otherwise', while attached to a noun (会員でなければ) it means 'unless it is ~'. The sentence-opening use follows a command or strong suggestion and warns of the bad outcome; さもなければ is its stiffer equivalent.
