Memory tip
歎 is an older variant of 嘆; modern writing almost always uses 嘆く, 感嘆, 悲嘆 instead. You meet 歎 inside compounds and in older or literary text, never standing alone in a sentence. Note it is not 痰 (たん, 'phlegm'), a common mix-up.
