- Essayists often qualify their own position (無条件に…つもりはない). A 主張 question tests the balanced version, not the extreme one.
- Historical examples (平安, 江戸, 明治) serve one argument: the complaint is old. Do not get lost in the details.
- The final sentence uses AではなくB. B (旧世代の慣れ) is the writer's punchline.
Passage
若者の言葉が乱れている、という嘆きは、おそらく文字が生まれて以来ずっと繰り返されてきた。平安の貴族も、江戸の学者も、自分たちの時代の若者の語法を苦々しく眺めていたに違いない。
だが、言葉は生き物である。使い手が変われば形も変わる。「全然」が肯定文で使われることを嘆く人は多いが、明治の文豪がすでにそう書いていたことは、あまり知られていない。
私は、言葉の変化を無条件に歓迎するつもりはない。伝わらない言葉は、言葉としての役目を果たしていないからだ。ただ、変化そのものを「乱れ」と呼ぶ前に、それが本当に伝達を損なっているのかを問うべきだ。多くの場合、損なわれているのは伝達ではなく、旧世代の慣れなのである。
