Strategy notes: read these before the passage
- Literary passages turn on a shift in the narrator's understanding. Find the pivot (ようやく気づいた) and contrast before and after.
- Metaphors (思考の地図, 未来, 問いの列, 畳む) all refer to the same insight. Questions on any one of them are answered by the others.
- The final sentence carries the emotional weight; ask what act 畳む describes literally and figuratively.
Passage
祖父の書斎には、開かれたことのない本が壁一面に並んでいた。少年の私はそれを、祖父の怠慢の証拠だと思っていた。読まない本を買う人間が、なぜ読書家と呼ばれるのか。
祖父が亡くなり、書斎を片付ける段になって、私はようやく気づいた。背表紙の並びそのものが、祖父の思考の地図だったのだ。どの本の隣にどの本を置くか。その配置には、読んだ本と読むはずだった本とが、等しく組み込まれていた。読まれなかった本は、祖父にとって未来だった。私が「怠慢」と呼んだものは、まだ閉じられていない問いの列だったのである。
箱に詰めるたびに、私は一つずつ、祖父の未来を畳んでいった。
