〜べくもない

Meaning

there is no way to …; cannot possibly …

〜べくもない means "there is no way one could X; it is out of the question". The circumstances make X impossible: 知るべくもなかった (there was no way I could have known). It is limited to a few verbs: 知る・望む・比べる・疑う・及ぶ・想像する.

Formal written Japanese: essays, novels, commentary. Often expresses helplessness or a huge gap (比べるべくもない = not even comparable). Not used in conversation, where 〜はずがない or 〜ようがない do the job.

    せんじちゅうのひとびとのくるしみは、いまのわたしたちにはそうぞうすべくもない。

    The suffering of people during the war is beyond anything we today could imagine.

    想像する → 想像すべくもない.

  5. あの時の判断が正しかったかどうか、今となっては確かめるべくもない。

    あのときのはんだんがただしかったかどうか、いまとなってはたしかめるべくもない。

    Whether that decision was right, there is no way to verify now.

    今となっては often sets up the impossibility.

The most frequent phrases are 知るべくもない, 望むべくもない, 比べるべくもない. Learn them as units. It carries a tone of resignation: the speaker accepts that X is beyond reach. In modern prose it is used sparingly, for emphasis.
