Meaning

"at / in (where an action happens)", "by / with (means)", "in (language)", "for (total)".

で answers "where does the action happen?" and "by what means?". レストランで食べます "I eat AT a restaurant"; バスで行きます "I go BY bus"; 日本語で話します "speak IN Japanese". It also gives a total: 三つで千円 "1,000 yen FOR three". The key contrast with に: に says where something IS; で says where something HAPPENS.

Place of an activity (eat, study, work, play, meet, buy); vehicles and tools (bus, train, pen, chopsticks); languages; and totals or units (二人で "the two of us", 全部で "in total").
