Strategy notes: read these before the passage
- When a passage tells a personal story that ends with a lesson, the lesson is usually in the last paragraph. Read the ending first to know what the story is building toward.
- Indicator words like それ / これ usually point back to the sentence immediately before. Substitute the previous sentence and check that it still makes sense.
- 〜のではないだろうか is a soft way of stating the writer's opinion. Treat it as an assertion, not a doubt.
Passage
新入社員のころ、上司によく注意されたことがある。「結論から話しなさい」ということだ。私は、何かを報告するとき、まず経過をていねいに説明していた。そのほうが親切だと思っていたからだ。しかし上司は、「今、うまくいっているのか、いないのか。それを先に言ってくれれば、あとの話は落ち着いて聞ける」と言った。
たしかに、忙しい人にとって、結果がわからないまま長い説明を聞くのは不安だ。悪い知らせなら、早く知るほど対応できる。それに気づいてから、私は報告の順番を変えた。まず結論、次に理由、最後に細かい経過。すると、上司との会話が短くなり、しかも誤解が減った。
これは、話し方の技術というより、相手の立場で考えることだと思う。「自分が説明しやすい順番」ではなく、「相手が判断しやすい順番」で伝える。職場のコミュニケーションで大切なのは、結局そこに尽きるのではないだろうか。
