Strategy notes: read these before the passage

私は、残業をなくすことに賛成だ。長く働けば成果が上がるというのは思い込みで、疲れた頭で三時間かけてする仕事は、元気な頭なら一時間で終わる。実際、私の会社では二年前に「午後七時消灯」を始めたが、売上はむしろ増えた。無駄な会議が減り、朝から集中して働くようになったからだ。
残業を前提にすると、昼間の仕事がだらだらする。時間に限りがあるからこそ、人は工夫する。「どうしても終わらない仕事」は、仕事の量ではなく、仕事の進め方に問題があることがほとんどだ。

私も、長時間働くこと自体をよいとは思わない。しかし、「全員一律に残業禁止」という方法には反対だ。仕事には種類がある。納期の前だけ忙しい仕事もあれば、アイデアが出るまで時間がかかる仕事もある。そうした仕事に一律のルールを当てはめると、結局、仕事を家に持ち帰る人や、タイムカードを押してから働く人が出てくる。これでは残業が「見えなくなった」だけだ。
必要なのは禁止ではなく、裁量だ。今日は早く帰り、明日は遅くまで働く。その判断を現場や個人に任せ、月の合計時間だけを管理する。ルールは、人を守るためのものであって、縛るためのものではないはずだ。
