By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

(1) although… / even though… (unexpected result); (2) in order to… / for …ing (purpose, with 便利 / 必要 / 使う)

〜のに has two faces. (1) "Even though": the result is the opposite of what you expected, often with regret or frustration: 勉強したのに落ちた "I studied, yet I failed". (2) "For (doing)": a purpose, used with words like 便利, 必要, 使う, かかる: 野菜を切るのに便利だ "handy for cutting vegetables".

Sense 1 is everywhere in speech and writing. It cannot be followed by a request, invitation or intention (use が / けど for those). Sentence-final のに expresses regret: 言ってくれればよかったのに. Sense 2 is common in product descriptions and explanations.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • If the second clause is a request, invitation or volitional, のに is wrong; choose が / けど.
  • For sense 2, the predicate after the blank (便利, 必要, 使う, かかる) tells you it is purpose のに, not ために.
  • Check for な after な-adjectives and nouns; 元気のに is a trap.
