Similar grammar and the difference
〜必要はない
Neutral "not necessary". ことはない is warmer and more spoken.
〜たことがない
"Have never done". Different particle (が) and past tense; easy to confuse visually.
〜なくてもいい
"Don't have to": permission not to do. ことはない says the action makes no sense at all.

- ✗
- 遅れることはない。(intended: I never come late)
- ✓
- 遅れることはめったにない。/ 遅れたことがない。
- Why
- ことはない means "no need", not "never happens".
Similar to 〜必要はない but more reassuring/colloquial. Not to be confused with 〜たことがない (never have done). Very often preceded by そんなに / 何も / わざわざ, which show the action is excessive.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- A reassuring context (小さなミス, まだ時間がある, 私が悪い) plus a blank after a dictionary-form verb points to ことはない.
- Check the particle in the options: ことはない (no need) vs ことがない (never). This distinction is tested often.
- Do not confuse with ことか (exclamation) or ことだ (advice).
