Common mistakes

  • ✗
    東京は大阪ほどにぎやかだ。
    ✓
    東京は大阪ほどにぎやかではない。/ 東京は大阪よりにぎやかだ。
    Why
ほど with a positive predicate in a comparison is wrong; use より for the positive direction.
  • ✗
    私は兄より背が高くない。
    ✓
    私は兄ほど背が高くない。
    Why
"Not as tall as" uses ほど〜ない; より + negative is unnatural.
  • ✗
    思うほど難しくなかった。
    ✓
    思ったほど難しくなかった。
    Why
The set phrase uses the past: 思ったほど.

Equivalent to A は B ほど〜ない. 〜くらい〜ない is possible but ほど is standard. Positive comparison uses より. Answering a question like 「難しかった?」 with 思ったほどじゃなかった is very natural.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • A negative predicate with a comparison noun before the blank = ほど.
  • より + negative is the designed trap; choose ほど.
