人口がへる
the population decreases
体重がへる
to lose weight
おなかがへる
to get hungry

Memory tip

Written 減る. It is the intransitive partner of 減らす (to reduce something). Keep it apart from 経る (also へる), which means 'to pass through / elapse' — context, not sound, tells them apart. The idiom おなかがへる means 'to be hungry'.
