Memory tip
めっきり only describes a *gradual change you have just noticed*, so it nearly always pairs with なる or a verb of increase/decrease, and often with a negative or ageing feel. You cannot use it for a state: 「めっきり寒い」 is wrong — say めっきり寒くなった.
