え is the native counter for layers, and it now survives only inside fixed words — 二重(ふたえ), 八重(やえ), 幾重(いくえ). Do not expect it to attach freely: 'heavy' is 重い(おもい), and the on readings じゅう/ちょう handle compounds like 重要 and 貴重.
