うれしい vs 楽しい

うれしい is how you feel at a moment because something good happened; 楽しい is how an activity or stretch of time feels while you are enjoying it. A present makes you うれしい, but a party is 楽しい. 楽しい describes the thing you are doing; うれしい describes you.

Use うれしい for your own glad reaction to an event: passing a test, getting a gift, hearing good news. It is a feeling at a point in time, and it usually has its cause attached with 〜て or 〜ので.
合格したので、とてもうれしいです。

楽しい
たのしい
Use 楽しい to describe an activity, event or period that is enjoyable — a party, a trip, a class, everyday life. The subject is typically the thing, not you.
昨日のパーティーは楽しかったです。

友だちと話すのは楽しいです。
ともだちとはなすのはたのしいです。

A trip is a stretch of time you enjoy, so 楽しい. 旅行はうれしかった would sound as if the trip itself were a piece of good news.

A reaction at one moment to something someone did, so only うれしい works. 楽しい would suggest their words were entertaining.

Plain emotion adjectives describe your own feelings. To say how someone else feels, use 〜そうです or a quoted statement. The same applies to 楽しい: 楽しそうですね.
Frequently asked questions
Can I say 楽しい about a person?
Not to mean that the person is happy. 楽しい人 means someone who is fun to be around. To say a person looks happy, use うれしそうです or 楽しそうです, depending on whether you mean a moment or an activity.
How do I say "I had a good time, thank you"?
楽しかったです、ありがとうございました. This is the standard thing to say when leaving a party or a dinner. うれしかったです fits better when someone did something kind specifically for you.
Is 楽しみ related to 楽しい?
Yes. 楽しみです means you are looking forward to something, as in 明日が楽しみです. It is used about the future and cannot be replaced by うれしい.
