使う vs 用いる

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

The difference here is register, not meaning: 使う and 用いる both mean 'to use', but 使う is the everyday spoken word and 用いる belongs to writing — reports, academic papers, instructions, formal speeches. In conversation, 使う is nearly always the right choice.

When to use each

使う

つかう

Use 使う for anything you say out loud, and for most writing too. It also covers senses 用いる does not: spending money, spending time, and using a person's labour.

  • はしを使って食べます。

    はしをつかってたべます。

    I eat using chopsticks.

  • この部屋を使ってもいいですか。

    このへやをつかってもいいですか。

    May I use this room?

用いる

もちいる

Use 用いる in formal written Japanese for methods, materials, data and tools — most often in the pattern ~を用いて, 'by means of'. It sounds stiff in casual speech, so learners mainly need to read it rather than produce it.

  • この研究では新しい方法を用いた。

    このけんきゅうではあたらしいほうほうをもちいた。

This study employed a new method.

  • 実験には特別な装置を用いる。

    じっけんにはとくべつなそうちをもちいる。

A special device is used for the experiment.

Sentences where only one works

  • ペンを貸して。使いたいんだ。

    ペンをかして。つかいたいんだ。

Lend me a pen. I want to use it.

Casual speech to a friend — 用いたいんだ here would be comically formal, like saying 'I wish to employ it'.

  • アンケートを用いて調査を行った。

    アンケートをもちいてちょうさをおこなった。

The survey was conducted using a questionnaire.

A written report: 使って would not be wrong, but 用いて matches the formal register of 行った.

  • お金を使いすぎました。

    おかねをつかいすぎました。

    I spent too much money.

Spending money is 使う only; 用いる never means 'spend'.

  • この言葉は手紙で用いられる。

    このことばはてがみでもちいられる。

This expression is used in letters.

Explaining how language is used, in a written explanatory style — a very common home for 用いる.

Common mistakes

  • 昨日、新しいパソコンを用いました。

    昨日、新しいパソコンを使いました。

A personal, everyday report of what you did takes 使う. 用いる makes a small daily action sound like a line from a technical paper.

  • 時間を用いる

    時間を使う

用いる goes with methods, tools and materials, not with time or money. 時間を使う is the natural phrase.

Frequently asked questions

So is 用いる just the polite version of 使う?

Not polite in the keigo sense — politeness comes from です/ます and honorific forms. 用いる is formal in style, the way 'employ' or 'utilise' is in English: it suits writing, not a polite conversation.

Will I lose marks if I use 使う where 用いる is expected?

In an essay 使う is accepted and normal. 用いる is worth using when you are deliberately writing in an academic register, especially in the ~を用いて pattern.

What about 利用する?

利用する is a third option, common for making use of a service or facility — 図書館を利用する, バスを利用する. It is more formal than 使う but far more common in speech than 用いる.
