たぶん vs おそらく
JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?
Both mean "probably", with much the same level of confidence — the difference is register. たぶん is the everyday spoken word; おそらく is its formal counterpart, used in writing, news, presentations and careful speech, and it usually closes the sentence with だろう or と思われる rather than でしょう.
When to use each

Use たぶん in conversation, messages and anything casual. It sits comfortably with でしょう and と思う, and is the safe default when you are speaking.

Use おそらく in essays, reports, news writing and formal speech. It pairs with だろう and と思われる, and usually introduces a considered inference rather than an offhand guess.
おそらく原因は設定の誤りだろう。
おそらくげんいんはせっていのあやまりだろう。
The cause is most likely a configuration error.
この方法ではおそらく間に合わないと思われる。
このほうほうではおそらくまにあわないとおもわれる。
This approach will probably not make the deadline.

A short message to a friend. おそらく遅れる here reads like a press statement.
おそらく今後も同じ傾向が続くだろう。

The same trend will most likely continue from here on.
Written analysis with だろう — おそらく's natural home. たぶん would undercut the tone of the sentence.
会議はおそらく二時間ほどかかる見込みです。
かいぎはおそらくにじかんほどかかるみこみです。
The meeting is expected to take about two hours.
Formal spoken Japanese at work. 見込みです and おそらく match each other in register.
Common mistakes
友だちに「おそらく行けない」と送った。
友だちに「たぶん行けない」と送った。
おそらく to a friend is not wrong, but it is markedly stiff — the effect is like writing "it is likely that I shall be unable to attend" in a text message.
レポートに「たぶん原因は…」と書いた。
レポートに「おそらく原因は…」と書いた。
たぶん in a written report sounds like a shrug. Formal writing expects おそらく.
おそらく行きます。
おそらく行くだろう。／たぶん行きます。
おそらく normally wants a tentative ending such as だろう or と思われる; a bare ます form with おそらく sounds mismatched.
Frequently asked questions
Is おそらく more certain than たぶん?
Not really. Both sit around "probably". おそらく can feel better reasoned because it appears in analytical writing, but it is not a stronger claim.
Which should I use in a JLPT essay?
おそらく, and the kanji form 恐らく is equally fine. Keep たぶん for the conversational material.
What about もしかしたら?
That is weaker — "maybe, possibly" — and points at an outside chance rather than the likely outcome.
