住む vs 暮らす
JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?
住む is where your home is — the address, the city, the building: 大阪に住んでいます. 暮らす is how you live your daily life: alone, with family, comfortably, on a small income — 一人で暮らしています. If a place name follows, you almost always want 住む.
When to use each
住む

Pairs with a location and に: 東京に住む, アパートに住む. Say it in the ～ている form — 住んでいます — because it describes an ongoing state rather than an action.
去年から大阪に住んでいます。

Pairs with how, not where: 一人で, 家族と, 幸せに, 楽しく. It takes in your whole daily life — money, routine, mood. A place can appear with で (田舎で暮らす), which frames it as a lifestyle rather than an address.
田舎で静かに暮らしたいです。
いなかでしずかにくらしたいです。
I want to live quietly in the countryside.
少ない給料で暮らすのは大変です。
すくないきゅうりょうでくらすのはたいへんです。

Sentences where only one works
どこに住んでいますか。
どこにすんでいますか。
Where do you live?
Asking for an address or area. This is the fixed question; どこで暮らしていますか sounds like an enquiry into someone's circumstances.
家族と一緒に楽しく暮らしています。
かぞくといっしょにたのしくくらしています。
I live happily together with my family.
楽しく describes the manner of living, not a location, so 暮らす.
一人で暮らすのは寂しいです。
ひとりでくらすのはさびしいです。
Living alone is lonely.
The topic is the experience of daily life rather than the flat, so 暮らす.
この町には十万人が住んでいます。
このまちにはじゅうまんにんがすんでいます。
A hundred thousand people live in this town.
A count of residents — pure location, so 住む.
Common mistakes
私は東京に住みます。
私は東京に住んでいます。
Plain 住みます sounds like a future move, 'I will live in Tokyo'. Where you live now is an ongoing state, so it needs 住んでいます. This is the most frequent error with this verb.
大阪に暮らしています。
大阪に住んでいます。／大阪で暮らしています。
暮らす does not take に for a place. Use 住む with に for an address, or 暮らす with で when you mean life there.
一人で住んでいて、お金がありません。
一人で暮らしていて、お金がありません。
Once the sentence is about getting by day to day, 暮らす is the fitting verb; 住む only reports where you are.
Frequently asked questions
Can I say 住んでいる for a short stay?
Not really. 住む implies a settled base. For a hotel or a few weeks somewhere, use 泊まる or 滞在する instead.
Is 暮らす more formal than 住む?
Not formal so much as broader and a little warmer. It appears constantly in ordinary speech about family life, money and retirement, while 住む is the neutral, factual word.
Which do I use for animals?
住む. 森にくまが住んでいます is natural. 暮らす is about a way of life and fits people much better.
