知る vs 分かる
JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?
知る is getting a piece of information from outside — you either have it or you do not. 分かる is something becoming clear to you, so it covers understanding, working out and grasping. Crucially, to say "I know" in the present you must say 知っています, never 知ります, but the negative is 知りません, not 知っていません.
When to use each
知る
しる
Use 知る for facts you have acquired: names, phone numbers, whether an event happened. It takes を. The plain form means "come to know", so the state "I know" must be 知っている, while the negative state is 知らない.
田中さんの住所を知っていますか。
たなかさんのじゅうしょをしっていますか。
Do you know Tanaka's address?
その店は知りません。
そのみせはしりません。
I don't know that shop.
分かる
わかる
Use 分かる when something is clear to you — a meaning, a reason, a language, how someone feels. The thing understood takes が, not を, because 分かる describes a state rather than an action you perform.
この漢字の意味が分かりません。
このかんじのいみがわかりません。
I don't understand what this kanji means.
説明を聞いて、やっと分かりました。
せつめいをきいて、やっとわかりました。
I listened to the explanation and finally got it.
Sentences where only one works
電話番号は知っていますが、住所は分かりません。
でんわばんごうはしっていますが、じゅうしょはわかりません。
I know the phone number, but I can't work out the address.
知っている means the information is already in your head; 分かりません here means you cannot figure it out.
日本語が分かります。
にほんごがわかります。
I understand Japanese.
日本語を知っています would mean you know the language exists, or know facts about it — not that you can use it.
彼の気持ちが分かります。
かれのきもちがわかります。
I understand how he feels.
Feelings become clear to you; you do not receive them as information, so 知る does not fit.
そのニュースを知りませんでした。
そのニュースをしりませんでした。
I didn't know about that news.
A fact that had not reached you — 知る with を. 分かりませんでした would mean the news made no sense to you.
Common mistakes
はい、知ります。
はい、知っています。
The plain present 知ります means "I will come to know", so answering a question with it sounds like a prediction. "I know" is always 知っています / 知っている.
いいえ、知っていません。
いいえ、知りません。
This is the asymmetry: the affirmative uses ~ている but the negative drops it. 知っていません is not used.
日本語を分かります。
日本語が分かります。
分かる takes が. Learners carry を over from English "understand something" and from 知る, which does take を.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it 知っています but 知りません? That looks inconsistent.
It is, and it has to be memorised. 知る means "come to know", so the plain form points at a future moment and the ~ている form gives the resulting state. In the negative, 知らない already means the coming-to-know never happened, which covers the state on its own, so no ~ている is added.
Can I say 分かっています?
Yes, but it means "I'm already aware of that" and can sound impatient, like "yes, yes, I know". For plain understanding use 分かります or 分かりました.
Which one answers "Do you know where the station is?"
Either, and both are common: 駅がどこか知っていますか asks whether you have the information, 駅がどこか分かりますか asks whether you can tell. 分かりますか is a little softer.
