狭い vs 小さい

狭い means there is not enough space — a cramped room, a narrow road, a tight gap. 小さい means the thing itself is small in size. A room can be 狭い because it is packed with furniture even when it is not 小さい. 狭い also appears in 狭い意味で, in the narrow sense. This is the mirror image of 広い vs 大きい.
When to use each

Use 狭い when area or width is insufficient: rooms, flats, roads, seats, gaps, and figuratively a narrow range or a narrow view. It is about the space, not the object that fills it.
私の部屋は狭いです。
わたしのへやはせまいです。
My room is cramped.
この道は狭いので、車は通れません。
このみちはせまいので、くるまはとおれません。
This road is narrow, so cars can't get through.
小さい
ちいさい
Use 小さい for the size of an object or person: animals, clothes, children, boxes, numbers, and by extension a quiet voice. It is the plain opposite of 大きい.
うちに小さい犬がいます。
うちにちいさいいぬがいます。
We have a small dog at home.
この靴は小さいです。
このくつはちいさいです。
These shoes are too small.
Sentences where only one works
部屋は小さくないですが、物が多くて狭いです。
へやはちいさくないですが、ものがおおくてせまいです。
The room isn't small, but it's cramped because there's so much stuff.
The clearest proof they differ: size and available space come apart.
この道は狭いです。

The width of a passage is 狭い. 小さい道 is not said.

Clothes and objects are measured by size, so 小さい only.

For living space that feels tight, Japanese uses 狭い. 小さい describes the building itself, which is not what a tenant complains about.

A box is an object with a size, so 小さい. 狭い would only work if you meant the space inside is too tight for what you are putting in.
Frequently asked questions
Is 狭い always negative?
Usually it carries a hint of complaint, that there is not enough room. Neutral descriptions of a small back road still use 狭い, though, so it is not always a criticism.
How do I say my room is small without complaining?
部屋が狭いです is what people actually say, complaint and all. If you want compact and cosy, こぢんまりした部屋 is the friendly phrasing.
What are the opposites?
