旅行 vs 旅

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

旅行 is the everyday word for a trip you plan, book and come home from — a holiday, a school trip, a family trip. 旅 is the same activity described as a journey, with a wistful or literary feel, and it is the one used for open-ended wandering.

When to use each

旅行

りょこう

Use 旅行 for any concrete trip with a destination and dates. It is the default in conversation and in anything practical — booking, packing, telling someone where you went.

  • 来月、京都へ旅行に行きます。

    らいげつ、きょうとへりょこうにいきます。

Next month I'm going on a trip to Kyoto.

  • 家族と旅行の予定を立てました。

    かぞくとりょこうのよていをたてました。

I made trip plans with my family.

旅

たび

Use 旅 when you want the feeling of a journey rather than the logistics — setting off, wandering, travelling for its own sake. It is common in titles, essays and songs, and in the set phrases 一人旅 and 旅に出る.

  • いつか一人で旅に出たいです。

    いつかひとりでたびにでたいです。

Someday I want to set off on a journey alone.

  • 昔の人は歩いて旅をしました。

    むかしのひとはあるいてたびをしました。

People long ago travelled on foot.

Sentences where only one works

  • 会社の旅行で北海道へ行きました。

    このほんは、わかもののたびのきろくです。

This book is a record of a young person's journey.

A reflective account leans to 旅; 旅行の記録 would read more like an itinerary.

  • 旅行の準備をしています。

    りょこうのじゅんびをしています。

I'm getting ready for my trip.

Packing and paperwork are practical, so 旅行. 旅の準備 exists but sounds deliberately literary.

  • 人生は旅のようなものだ。

    じんせいはたびのようなものだ。

    Life is like a journey.

Figurative journeys are always 旅; 旅行 is not used as a metaphor.

Common mistakes

  • 旅をしたいですから、ホテルを予約しました。

    旅行したいですから、ホテルを予約しました。

Once hotels and bookings are involved, the trip is a 旅行. Pairing 旅 with reservations sounds like a novel narrator filling in a booking form.

  • 日本に旅しました。

    日本を旅しました。

旅する takes を for the area travelled through, not に for a destination. If you mean 'I took a trip to Japan', say 日本に旅行しました.

Frequently asked questions

Is 旅 more advanced? Should I just always use 旅行?

As a learner, yes — 旅行 is safe in almost every conversation. Learn 旅 to recognise it, and use it in the fixed phrases 一人旅 and 旅に出る, which are completely natural in speech.

Can I say 旅行する as a verb?

Yes. 旅行する is normal, and so is 旅行に行く. 旅する also exists, but carries the literary flavour of 旅.

Which one do I use for a business trip?

Neither, usually — a business trip has its own word, 出張 (しゅっちょう). 旅行 would suggest you went for pleasure.
