面白い vs 楽しい

面白い describes the thing — it is interesting, funny or entertaining. 楽しい describes your experience — you are having a good time. So 面白い映画 is a film that grips or amuses you, while 楽しい一日 is a day you enjoyed living through. This is why 面白い人 means a funny, entertaining person and 楽しい人 means someone who is fun to be around.
When to use each

おもしろい
Use 面白い for a property of the thing itself: a book, film, story, idea or person that is interesting, amusing or worth paying attention to. It can be said about something you did not personally enjoy, as long as it is interesting.
この本はとても面白いです。
このほんはとてもおもしろいです。
This book is really interesting.
田中さんは面白い人ですね。
たなかさんはおもしろいひとですね。
Tanaka is a funny guy, isn't he.
楽しい
たのしい
Use 楽しい when the point is that you, or someone, are having a good time. It fits events, activities and stretches of time you enjoy, and it is about the enjoyment, not about the thing being clever or funny.
きのうのパーティーは楽しかったです。
きのうのパーティーはたのしかったです。
Yesterday's party was fun.
友だちと話すのが楽しいです。
ともだちとはなすのがたのしいです。
I enjoy talking with my friends.
Sentences where only one works
彼は面白い人です。
かれはおもしろいひとです。
He is a funny, entertaining person.
面白い here says he makes people laugh. 楽しい人 would instead mean he is pleasant company.
彼といると楽しいです。
かれといるとたのしいです。
I have a good time when I'm with him.
The sentence is about your enjoyment, so 楽しい. 面白い would turn it into a comment on how amusing he is.
この映画は面白いですが、悲しいです。
このえいがはおもしろいですが、かなしいです。
This film is interesting, but it's sad.
面白い can mean gripping rather than cheerful, so it survives next to 悲しい. 楽しい映画 would contradict the second half.
毎日が楽しいです。
まいにちがたのしいです。
Every day is enjoyable.
A stretch of lived time takes 楽しい. 毎日が面白い would sound like life keeps producing curiosities.

パーティーは楽しかったです。
Saying a party was 面白い suggests something odd or amusing happened there, not that you enjoyed it. For a good time, use 楽しい.
この本は楽しいです。
この本は面白いです。
Books, films and stories are normally judged by whether they are interesting, so 面白い is the standard choice. 楽しい本 sounds unusual as a plain review.
Frequently asked questions
Can both work in the same sentence?
Often yes, with a change of meaning rather than a mistake. 日本語の勉強は面白いです says the subject itself is interesting; 日本語の勉強は楽しいです says studying it is enjoyable for you. Many learners mean both and can simply say either.
What is the difference between 面白い人 and 楽しい人?
面白い人 is someone funny or unusual, the person who makes the table laugh. 楽しい人 is someone whose company is enjoyable. You can be one without being the other.
Is 面白い always positive?
Not always warm, but usually not an insult. It can mean interesting in a neutral or even odd way, as in 面白い考え, an interesting idea. Tone of voice decides.
