乗る vs 乗せる

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

乗る is you getting on or into a vehicle; 乗せる is putting someone or something else on it — giving a person a lift, or loading luggage. バスに乗る means you board the bus; 友達を車に乗せる means you give your friend a ride.

When to use each

のる

Use 乗る when the subject is the one boarding. The vehicle is marked with に: バスに乗る, 車に乗る.

  • 毎朝、七時のバスに乗ります。

    まいあさ、しちじのバスにのります。

    I take the seven o'clock bus every morning.

  • 駅で電車に乗りました。

    えきででんしゃにのりました。

    I got on the train at the station.

乗せる

のせる

Use 乗せる when you put someone or something onto a vehicle or a surface. What is put on takes を and the place takes に: 友達を車に乗せる.

  • 駅まで友達を車に乗せました。

    えきまでともだちをくるまにのせました。

    I gave my friend a lift as far as the station.

  • 荷物をトラックに乗せてください。

    にもつをトラックにのせてください。

    Please load the luggage onto the truck.

Sentences where only one works

  • 子どもを自転車の後ろに乗せます。

    こどもをじてんしゃのうしろにのせます。

    I put my child on the back of the bicycle.

    Someone else is being put on, so 乗せる with を.

  • 私も自転車に乗れます。

    わたしもじてんしゃにのれます。

    I can ride a bicycle too.

    The subject is the rider, so 乗る with に.

  • 友達を車に乗りました。

    友達を車に乗せました。

    乗る cannot take a を object like this. If the person boarding is not the subject, you need 乗せる.

  • 私はバスを乗ります。

    私はバスに乗ります。

    乗る marks the vehicle with に, not を.

Frequently asked questions

How do I say that someone gave me a ride?

乗せてくれました, or from your own side 乗せてもらいました: 駅まで乗せてもらいました.

Does 乗せる only work for vehicles?

No. Putting anything on top of a surface is のせる: 皿に乗せる, テーブルに乗せる. In that sense it is also written 載せる, especially for putting something on a list or in a publication.

What about 乗る for a chair?

For sitting on furniture, use 座る. 乗る means getting on top of something, so いすに乗る means standing on the chair.
