店 vs 商店

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

店 is the everyday word for any shop, and it is the one to use in almost every sentence. 商店 is formal and now survives mostly inside compounds and names such as 商店街 and 山田商店 — a learner very rarely needs it as a standalone word.

When to use each

店

みせ

Use 店 for any shop, restaurant, café or bar, in speech and in writing. If you are talking about a place you buy things from, this is the word.

  • 駅の近くに新しい店ができました。

    えきのちかくにあたらしいみせができました。

A new shop has opened near the station.

  • この店は八時に閉まります。

    このみせははちじにしまります。

    This shop closes at eight.

商店

しょうてん

Use 商店 in formal or administrative writing about small retail businesses, and in the fixed compounds and shop names it lives in: 商店街, 小売商店, 田中商店. Do not reach for it to describe a shop you are standing in.

  • 駅前の商店街はいつもにぎやかです。

    えきまえのしょうてんがいはいつもにぎやかです。

The shopping street in front of the station is always lively.

  • 山田商店は百年続いています。

    やまだしょうてんはひゃくねんつづいています。

Yamada Shoten has been in business for a hundred years.

Sentences where only one works

  • どの店でご飯を食べますか。

    どのみせでごはんをたべますか。

Which place shall we eat at?

Everyday conversation takes 店. 商店 would sound like a line from a town-planning document.

  • 商店街で買い物をしました。

    しょうてんがいでかいものをしました。

I did my shopping in the shopping street.

商店街 is a fixed compound with no 店街 alternative, and it is by far the commonest place a learner meets 商店.

  • 市は地域の商店を支援しています。

    しはちいきのしょうてんをしえんしています。

    The city supports local retailers.

Formal writing about businesses as a category is where 商店 still stands alone naturally.

Common mistakes

  • この商店はおいしいです。

    この店はおいしいです。

商店 is a category label for a retail business, not a name for the restaurant in front of you. It sounds like reading a survey out loud.

  • 商店に入りましょう。

    店に入りましょう。

Going into a shop is plain everyday talk and takes 店. 商店 is far too stiff for an invitation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to learn 商店 at all?

Learn to recognise it, mainly in 商店街 and in shop names. You will almost never need to produce it yourself — 店 covers what you want to say.

Is 商店 old-fashioned?

As a standalone word it does feel dated and formal, which is why so many old family shops are called 〇〇商店. In compounds it is still completely current.

What about お店?

お店 is just 店 with a polite prefix, and it is very common in everyday speech. It is still the same word, so the advice above is unchanged.
