消える vs 消す

消える is something going out or disappearing on its own (電気が消える, the light goes out); 消す is someone switching it off or rubbing it out (電気を消す, テレビを消す, 字を消す). The key point for learners is that 消す is the ordinary word for turning off a light, a TV or an air conditioner — you do not need a separate verb for off.

Use 消える when a light or flame goes out by itself, or when something vanishes: writing fading, snow melting away, someone dropping out of sight. It takes が.
急に電気が消えました。

風でろうそくの火が消えました。

The candle's flame went out in the wind.
The wind is a cause marked with で, but no person did it, so 消える. 火を消しました would mean someone put it out.
