貸す vs 借りる

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

貸す is to lend — the thing leaves your hands. 借りる is to borrow — the thing comes into your hands. Both can appear with に, so watch the subject: 友達に貸す means I lend to my friend, 友達に借りる means I borrow from my friend.

When to use each

貸す

かす

Use 貸す when you are the one handing something over for temporary use. The person who receives it takes に. It also covers renting out, and figuratively lending a hand or an ear.

  • 友達に本を貸しました。

    ともだちにほんをかしました。

I lent a book to my friend.

  • ペンを貸してください。

    ペンをかしてください。

    Please lend me a pen.

借りる

かりる

Use 借りる when you are the one taking something for temporary use. The source takes に or から, and the place takes で. It also covers renting a flat or a car — borrowing for money is still 借りる.

  • 図書館で本を借ります。

    としょかんでほんをかります。

I borrow books at the library.

  • 友達に傘を借りました。

    ともだちにかさをかりました。

I borrowed an umbrella from my friend.

Sentences where only one works

  • 私は友達に自転車を貸しました。

    わたしはともだちにじてんしゃをかしました。

I lent my friend my bike.

The bike is mine and it goes to the friend — the subject owns it, so 貸す.

  • 私は友達に自転車を借りました。

    わたしはともだちにじてんしゃをかりました。

I borrowed a bike from my friend.

Identical particles, reversed direction. With 借りる, に marks the source, not the receiver — which is exactly why this pair is confusing.

  • 東京でアパートを借りています。

    とうきょうでアパートをかりています。

I rent a flat in Tokyo.

Paying rent does not change the verb: the tenant 借りる, the landlord 貸す.

  • ちょっと手を貸してくれませんか。

    ちょっとてをかしてくれませんか。

Could you give me a hand?

The set phrase is 手を貸す — you are asking the other person to be the lender. 手を借りる exists too, but then you are the subject: 友達の手を借りた.

Common mistakes

  • すみません、ペンを借りてください。

    すみません、ペンを貸してください。

〜てください tells the other person to do the action, so 借りてください orders them to borrow a pen. To ask someone to lend you one, the verb has to be 貸す. If you want yourself as the subject, say ペンを借りてもいいですか.

  • 図書館で本を貸しました。

    図書館で本を借りました。

The library is the lender; you are the borrower. As written, it says you lent books to the library.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ask to borrow something politely?

Two natural options, with different subjects: 貸していただけませんか (would you lend it to me?) and 借りてもいいですか (may I borrow it?). Both are fine; the first is a request of them, the second asks permission for you.

Does 借りる also mean "to rent"?

Yes. 部屋を借りる is to rent a room and 車を借りる to rent a car, with 貸す on the other side for renting out. Japanese does not split borrowing and renting the way English does; レンタルする exists but is limited to commercial hire.

What about 返す?

返す is giving it back, and it completes the cycle for both: 借りた本を返す, return the book you borrowed.
