だんだん vs 徐々に

They mean the same thing — gradually — and the difference is register. だんだん is the spoken, everyday word you use with friends and in class; 徐々に is the written one you use in reports, news and formal speech. Neither describes a slower change than the other; swapping them changes only how the sentence sounds.

A personal, felt change in casual speech. 徐々に眠くなってきた sounds like a clinical report on yourself.
