ちょうど vs ぴったり

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

ちょうど means "exactly, just" for times, amounts and moments — ちょうど三時です, ちょうど今出かけるところです. ぴったり means a perfect fit or a perfect match — このシャツはぴったりだ for clothes, この色は部屋にぴったりだ for something that suits. For clock time and round numbers use ちょうど; for fit and suitability use ぴったり.

When to use each

ちょうど

ちょうど

Use ちょうど for an exact figure (ちょうど千円), an exact time (ちょうど三時), and for "just at that moment" with ところ (ちょうど今帰ったところです). ちょうどいい is the everyday phrase for "just right" — the right size, temperature or amount.

  • 今ちょうど三時です。

    いまちょうどさんじです。

    It's exactly three o'clock now.

  • ちょうど今、駅に着いたところです。

    ちょうどいま、えきについたところです。

I've just this moment arrived at the station.

ぴったり

ぴったり

Use ぴったり when two things match with no gap: clothes on a body, a lid on a pot, figures that tally, or a person or thing that suits a role (この仕事は彼女にぴったりだ). It behaves as an adverb and as a な-adjective, so ぴったりの服 and ぴったりだ are both normal.

  • このシャツは私にぴったりです。

    このシャツはわたしにぴったりです。

    This shirt fits me perfectly.

  • その色はこの部屋にぴったりだと思います。

    そのいろはこのへやにぴったりだとおもいます。

I think that colour is perfect for this room.

Sentences where only one works

  • 会議はちょうど十時に始まります。

    かいぎはちょうどじゅうじにはじまります。

Clock time on the hour takes ちょうど. ぴったり十時 is heard too and sounds like "ten on the dot", but ちょうど is the neutral choice.

  • この靴は足にぴったりです。

    このくつはあしにぴったりです。

These shoes fit my feet perfectly.

Fit between two objects, so ぴったり with に. ちょうどいい would say the size is acceptable; ぴったり says it matches exactly.

The water is at just the right temperature.

A value landing in the right range is ちょうどいい. Temperature has no shape to match, so ぴったり does not fit.

  • この仕事は彼にぴったりだ。

    このしごとはかれにぴったりだ。

This job is perfect for him.

Suitability between a person and a role is ぴったり. ちょうど cannot carry this "made for you" meaning.

Common mistakes

  • このシャツはちょうどです。

    このシャツはちょうどいいです。/このシャツはぴったりです。

ちょうど is an adverb and cannot end the sentence as a predicate on its own. Either add いい, or use ぴったり, which can be a predicate.

  • ぴったり今、出かけます。

    ちょうど今、出かけます。

For "right now, just at this moment" the set phrase is ちょうど今. ぴったり does not mark a point in time this way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say ぴったり三時?

Yes. ぴったり三時 means "three on the dot" and is natural, slightly more emphatic than ちょうど三時. This is the one area where the two genuinely overlap.

What is the difference between ちょうどいい and ぴったり for clothes?

ちょうどいい means the size works for you — comfortable, not too big or too small. ぴったり means it matches your body exactly, which can be a compliment or, depending on the garment, mean it is tight.

Is ぴったり too casual?

No. It is an onomatopoeic word but perfectly normal in polite speech and in shops, for example この服はお客様にぴったりですね.
