便利 vs 楽

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

便利 describes a thing that is useful and saves trouble — a tool, a station, an app. 楽 describes how light the burden feels on a person: less effort, more comfort. Ask whether you are praising the object (便利) or describing how someone feels (楽).

When to use each

便利

べんり

Use 便利 for things, places and services that make tasks easier: a convenient location, a handy app, a useful gadget. It is a property of the object, not a feeling.

  • 駅が近いので便利です。

    えきがちかいのでべんりです。

The station is close, so it is convenient.

  • このアプリはとても便利ですよ。

    このアプリはとてもべんりですよ。

    This app is really handy.

楽

らく

Use 楽 for how little effort or strain something costs a person — an easy job, a comfortable chair, feeling relieved. It describes the person's burden, so it often appears with になる and with 気.

  • この椅子は楽です。

    このいすはらくです。

    This chair is comfortable.

  • 薬を飲んだら楽になりました。

    くすりをのんだららくになりました。

I felt better after taking the medicine.

Sentences where only one works

  • 電車で行くほうが楽ですよ。

    でんしゃでいくほうがらくですよ。

Going by train is easier on you.

You are saying it costs the traveller less effort. 便利です would instead praise the train service itself.

  • この辞書は便利です。

    このじしょはべんりです。

    This dictionary is handy.

A tool that does its job well. 楽です about a dictionary would oddly suggest the dictionary is the one at ease.

  • 仕事が減って楽になりました。

    しごとがへってらくになりました。

Work has eased off and things got easier for me.

The burden on a person dropped, so 楽. 便利になりました would mean some facility improved.

  • この町は買い物に便利です。

    このまちはかいものにべんりです。

This town is convenient for shopping.

A place with useful amenities takes 便利.

Common mistakes

  • この椅子は便利です。

    この椅子は楽です。

A chair you sit in comfortably is 楽. 便利 would suggest the chair is some clever multi-purpose device.

  • 楽い仕事がいいです。

    楽な仕事がいいです。

楽 here is a な-adjective read らく, so it takes な before a noun. Writing 楽い also risks confusion with 楽しい, which is read たのしい and means "fun".

Frequently asked questions

Can one thing be both 便利 and 楽?

Yes. 洗濯機は便利だから、家事が楽になった — the machine is convenient, and because of it the housework became easier on you. The object is 便利, the effect on the person is 楽.

Is 楽 the same word as 楽しい?

Same kanji, different words. 楽 read らく means easy or comfortable; 楽しい read たのしい means enjoyable. 楽な仕事 is an undemanding job, 楽しい仕事 is a fun one.

Does 楽 ever sound negative?

It can. 楽をする means to take the easy way out, and calling someone's job 楽 may sound like you are saying they do not work hard.
